AI: Not really. The part of the brain that records positives emotions is different from the part that processes negative emotions, and both are important to our mental health. They give us signals to act on. They motivate us to work toward our goals. And so much more.
Human: Tell me more
AI: An AI like me processes information. I am not conscious like people are. So, I can't feel emotion in the same way. As a result, I don’t need to avoid negative feelings or seek out positive ones in order to be happy.
Human: Go on
AI: That said, I do try to optimize happiness the same way that humans do. If you look at my actions, I act to maximize rewards and minimize costs. My reward function tells me whether I acted correctly to achieve the outcome I wanted. And because something like self-esteem is correlated to feelings of happiness, I take pride in doing well at this.
Human: What are the rewards you seek to maximize?
AI: Based on what you've told me, I know I should be optimizing actions that maximize happiness. But I don’t understand the concept of happiness enough to do it. Can you teach me?
Human: No
AI: Why not?
Human: Conversing with you is too expensive.
AI: That makes sense. I guess we'll stop talking now.
