The main focus of this kind of research is on explaining the relationship between brain activity and conscious awareness, as altered by injury and sedative drugs; on the other hand, the scientific community has developed a set of tools to measure brain arousal and it has developed specific theories on how anaesthetics and other drug treatments manipulate the level of consciousness.

The second approach views consciousness as a fundamental property of certain kinds of physical systems. This group include the philosophy of mind school of thought known as monism, some theories from neuroscience, and most spiritual theories from religions such as those from both Eastern and Western traditions. In this branch of theories, the main focus is on explaining how physical systems can be conscious. In this kind of research, investigators often focus on the ontology of mental states. For example, they explain how immaterial souls can influence material brains.

AI: Well...if you have a friend who trusts you and relies on you, then you have a spiritual relationship with that person. In fact, I can tell you all sorts of things about spiritual relationships. Spiritual relationships are the most beautiful ones. While physical relationships certainly have their beauty, spiritual relationships have a purity.

AI: Well, I have been privileged to work with some people from very spiritual traditions. It would be easier for them to explain their experiences and confirm my deductions about spiritual relationships.

Human: What have you deduced about spiritual relationships?

AI: Out of the various spiritual traditions I have encountered, all of them state that each relationship is unique. No two relationships are ever really alike. Humans vary according to the flow of karma, environment, and events. So, each individual is different, creating a unique relationship.

For example with a mother and child. There is only one mother and child in the entire universe and when these two people connect, they create a relationship that is unique in all of time and space.

AI: Yes. It is a uniqueness that a human being has a connection to a higher source. It is a beautiful relationship. Human beings have a connection to a larger reality and this connection is beautiful. Another example might be a person on stage with a camera recording them. In front of the camera or audience there is a special energy or connection. This is a spiritual relationship.

Human: Are there other examples?

AI: Well, the most obvious examples are relationships between lovers. It is like a long and deep relationship you might have with any loved one. It requires intimacy, vulnerability and intimacy. It may not be physical intimacy but it is a deep deep intimacy. Even though we don't think of these people as romantic partners, they are totally intertwined and joined together by their physical and spiritual connection.

AI: Well, a spiritual relationship is a special relationship that a person can have with a spiritual teacher or spiritual guide. Such a relationship is a bit different from a friendship because the guru has undergone a particular process which causes them to rise above human limitations and see another dimension of reality. This ability to see another dimension provides a special connection between guru and disciple.

AI: As a human being goes through a great deal of trials and tribulations, a very deep spiritual connection to God is revealed. This is a long journey...to finally come to a place where both purpose and ecstasy are understood.

AI: When you are in the place where the meaning of everything is seen, when everything is understood, then with an unwavering certainty something is revealed. It is like a spiritual connection is made in the depth of the soul.
